Veritas Academy of Tucson Receives National Award for the CLT8
January 23, 2024
Veritas has been named one of the top ten schools in Classic Learning Test’s (CLT) 2022-2023 CLT8 School Rankings. This award recognizes our student body for collectively receiving one of the highest average scores in the nation on the CLT8 during the 2022-2023 academic year.
The CLT8 is a diagnostic and summative assessment offered by Classic Learning Test and designed for 7th and 8th graders. Evaluating reading, grammar, and mathematical skills, the CLT8 engages students with thoughtful content drawn from classic literature and historical texts and provides a comprehensive measure of achievement and aptitude.
Since its inception in 2016, Classic Learning Test has offered assessments steeped in more intellectually rich and rigorous content than other standardized tests. CLT’s suite of assessments now serves grades 3-12.
Out of the hundreds of schools that take the CLT8 every year, our ranking is a remarkable achievement.
Curriculum
It is our goal at Veritas Academy to satisfy our distinctly classical, college-preparatory academic agenda with rigorous and relevant curricula. We solidify our curricular choices by evaluating them using the following criteria:
Academic validity, accuracy, and excellence as supported by the classical approach to education
Firm grounding in biblical absolutes to allow ease of biblical integration throughout all course materials
Parent-friendly, teacher-directed lessons with a secondary component of experiential, hands-on activities as a means to solidify previously imparted knowledge
Classical education expects more from its students than a basic mastery of a set of subjects. It holds firm to the traditions of Western culture in viewing all subjects as inextricably linked, each in its way expressing some fundamental truth about God and the universe He created. As characterized by the grammar stage of classical education, Veritas Academy emphasizes the accumulation of basic facts through the use of authentic literature and resources within the chronological progression of historical time periods.
Language Arts
The goal of the Trivium is mastery of language. A large portion of our curriculum is devoted to reaching this goal.
- School of Rhetoric (9-12): The Rhetoric Companion, Classical Rhetoric for the Modern Student, Veritas Press Omnibus, Rhetoric Alive, Latin Alive, AP Latin
- School of Grammar (K-6): Phonics Museum, Logic of English, First Language Lessons, Well-Ordered Language, Institute for Excellence in Writing, Song School Latin, Latin for Children
- School of Logic (7-8): Institute for Excellence in Writing, Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind, Veritas Press Omnibus, Latin Alive
Math
School of Grammar
Saxon Math is used for grades K-6, beginning with Math 1 in Kindergarten and ending with Algebra 1/2 in 6th grade. The Saxon approach of mastery through review and drilling math facts fits well with the grammar stage of the Trivium.
History
History is the framework that gives shape to the Classical philosophy of education. All other subject content is organized around the chronological study of historical time periods. At Veritas, students study history in three cycles. In the School of Grammar, students learn 32 events each year (2nd-5th grade) from creation to the present. The focus in theses years is the memorization of the timeline through songs that include the events and dates. In the Schools of Logic and Rhetoric history, literature and theology are integrated into one discussion-based class in which the students cover the scope of history two more times with a focus on reading through the primary texts and classics of literature and theology. Some of the History curricula we use include:
- School of Grammar: Veritas Press History Cards, Story of the World, Art History
- School of Logic: Western Civilization by Jackson Spielvogel, Veritas Press Omnibus I-III
- School of Rhetoric: Western Civilization by Jackson Spielvogel, Veritas Press Omnibus IV-VI

Science
At Veritas, our School of Grammar students attend a full day of science classes and workshops one Monday per month. It equals the same amount of class time as they would attend in a month, but having a full day allows adequate time for all of the learning and hands-on projects. Our School of Logic and School of Rhetoric students have science class every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and use the Apologia text book series.
Extracurricular
Veritas Academy offers various extracurricular activities that occur outside of the regular school hours, including:
- Competitive team sports for high school (S.A.A.A.) and middle school (T.I.A.L.)
- Special interest clubs (e.g. Chess Club, Girls on the Run, Latin Club)
- Other enrichment activities (e.g. hand bells, tennis, ballet)

School of Rhetoric
Grades 9-12 are some of the most important formative years in a child’s life. Children tend to solidify their belief system amidst the struggle with incorporating the foundational principles that they have learned previously with the present realities of a Godless world. At Veritas, we seek to assist parents in training up children in the way that they should go so that when they are old, they WILL NOT depart from it. As such the Rhetoric phase of life at Veritas seeks to focus on the following ideals:
- Loving the Lord with ALL your heart, mind, soul and strength
- Loving your neighbor as yourself
- Humility
- The fear of the Lord
- Owning one’s faith
- Defending one’s faith
- Learning to think with Godly wisdom
The School of Rhetoric is the culmination of the trivium. In the Rhetoric Stage, students take all they have learned in the Grammar and Logic Stages and learn how to present themselves in a wise and winsome manner. The emphases of all classes in the Rhetoric Stage are writing and speaking well. In addition to the classes listed below we offer various fine arts courses.
