Your Values Are Showing! My daughter Abby was so embarrassed. She had a long-time friend come over to assist her with the latest foster parenting challenge. Two sisters for whom they had cared in the Summer of ’18 had returned to their home after a year’s absence. Her friend was helping watch the girls in the pool when the five-year-old strongly cussed her out! Abby was so embarrassed that this had happened to her sweet friend.

But as we talked later, this was not a reflection on my daughter, but rather this revealed what had been going on in the little girl’s home over the last year. After being disciplined for the incident, Suzy (not her real name) said, “So we don’t say mean things in the pool?” Abby informed her, “We don’t say mean things any where.“
Another Mom told me about an opposite incident. After thinking on some things, her 8-year-old boy said, “Turning to God is better than finding 3 million boxes of 3 million dollars…. You’d be rich but your life would feel unhappy.” This Mom was so touched and so was I. It was so precious, I practically wanted to cry. I was not only proud of the little boy, I was proud of the Mom and Dad. Clearly, their son had picked up some great key core values!
Whether we like it or not, we are constantly passing along our values, not only by what we say and teach but even more so by what we do and the things we blurt out of our mouths. According to Jesus, these things also reveal what is going on deep within us: “Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.“
Dear Lord, help each of sow to please the Spirit in our homes and in the lives/hearts of our children. May our homes shine with the glory of your love and tenderness. May the words of our mouths and the meditation of our hearts God bless, be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer. Christopher
